Dr. Schmutz has been private practice for more than 20 years treating a broad spectrum of difficulties in adults, children, and adolescents. In her early career, Dr. Schmutz had joint appointments as a staff psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry as well Director of Psychology at an obesity clinic at Lutheran General Hospital.
Subsequently, Dr. Schmutz was a consultant for Little Friends, Inc. for 15 years providing teaching workshops and case consultations for teachers, therapists, and staff in special education high schools, workshop settings, supported employment programs, and group homes. Additionally, she was a clinical instructor at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine for 13 years training practicum students, interns, and postdoctoral fellows in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
Dr. Schmutz received a B.A. in Behavioral Science from the University of Chicago. She received her M.A. and Psy.D. in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology.
